The Costa Tropical now faces its big chance!

Yesterday the Councilor for Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía, Luciano Alonso, went ot Motril to announce an investment of 30 million euros which will completely transform the Costa Tropical as a tourist destination, making it larger and stronger. The regional government will provide up to 18 million euros of the total amount and the rest will be financed by the municipalities and entrepreneurs.

After hearing the good news that Alonso brought to the coast yesterday, the president of the association entrepreneurs, Julio Rodriguez, said that this means a lot to the region and it is a springboard to take that final leap in the tourism for many people working in the sector on the coast.

The Sustainable Tourism Initiative (STI)-aims to strengthen the competitiveness of the region as a tourist destination by promoting and offering quality accommodation that complements that of ‘ sun and beach ‘. As he told the counselor to provide kindness and good weather is not enough, so we must seek other avenues that may be attractive to tourists.

The initiative, which will be implemented over the next four years in collaboration with the Association of Sustainable Tourism on the Costa Tropical and will benefit the 19 municipalities in this area: Albondón, Albuñol, Almuñécar, Los Guájares, Gualchos, Itrabo, Jete, Lentegí, Lújar, Molvízar, Motril Murtas, Otívar, Polopos, Rubite Salobreña, Sorvilán, Turon and Velez de Benaudalla.

The adviser said the plan will prioritise action aimed at promoting a range of quality accommodation in all municipalities in the area, improving the range of leisure and development of segments and the interior, cultural, & gastronomic delights. Alonso made it very clear that the Costa Tropical has great potential: it is one of the sites which can grow and that “can and must do so” under two premises: the pursuit of excellence and not be great destruction. “It has sun, sand, and one of the most visited monuments in Spain, the Alhambra.

Cane/Rum
Also indicated was the need to seek to publicise details of indigenous identity as sugar cane and rum, which will promote the use of new technologies and to install energy saving systems clean. Commonwealth President and Mayor of Motril, Carlos Rojas, said on behalf of the district be “very pleased and very grateful” for the investment to be made on the Coast. “The largest of the province of Granada”.

The investment managed by the Sustainable Tourism Association in which the entrepreneurs in the region have an important role. The current president, Julio Rodriguez, recalled how long it has been demanding a firm commitment of the Government of Andaluia and yesterday has finally made palpable. It has come after much previous work, which has been very difficult to combine different political ideals and thoughts. Thus, in his words, made a statement to each of the mayors of the municipalities in the district who have put their efforts in making tourism initiative a reality.

Saga, the English tour operator is re-establishing their links with the Costa Tropical coastal resort of Almunecar.

Until 2 years ago Saga were bringing British tourists to the town, but with all the works on the underground car parking lot they decided to stop for a while until the things were finally restored to normality.

Now the British have returned to Hotel Helios in the town because the works are well advanced and are not as annoying as when they were forced to move to hotels in Nerja.

Saga, which brings thousands of British tourists to the Costa Tropical, did not hesitate to withdraw its customers in late September 2007 to coincide with arrival of the machinery to build the parking lot. “This has meant that we spent two hard winters without these clients. We even lost 13,500 stays during that time, “said Rafael Lamelas, director of the Helios hotel.

The hotel now plans to launch a promotional offer now between the 3rd and 15 January 2010 also offering a special price for 21, 18, and 14 stays days.

The hotel has also recently lost the Belgian tour operator “Best Coast Tour” after 15 years. This tour operator has decided to promote more its destinations in Salou and concentrate more on holidays by coach.

The opening of the A-44, which, after today joins the cities of Granada and Motril, is hoped to generate a big economic boost in the area of industry and technology both Capital Province and in several municipalities in
its metropolitan area. The Technology Park, Health Sciences, Parque Metropolitano, Industrial and Technological Marchalhendín, the future platformfor Customs warehouse logistics, together with the industrial park of the Port of Motril, all will also obtain large benefits with this new infrastructure.

The Ministry of Innovation has made its first estimates, and according to them, 20,000 to 30,000 new jobs will be created in all these areas during a period of time ranging from fifteen to twenty years. The only real challenge now is to weather the current economic crisis.

To the Board of Andalucia, the 60 km that now exists linking these two largest towns in the Province of Granada by the autovía will create a ‘golden mile high’ and the Board thinks that businesses in the industrial and technological sectors will benefit greatly.
Agriculture and tourism, is another sector to benefit which will be a strong endorsement to all farming activity giving easier access to the domestic market. It will also enhance the business for the Port of Motril boosting the output of the Port via industrial products.
The president of the Confederation of Grenadine Employers, Gerardo Cuerva, for his part says that connection between Madrid and Motril motorway through Bailén, brings some positive effects ”that will begin to be noticed this summer in tourism on the Costa Tropical and Granada.

Some 80 passengers from the ship went to Granada and Nerja and the remaining 170 visited the city of Motril and its commercial center, thanks to the shuttle bus hired by the Port Authority through Motril Port. The Funchal, the name of the ship, is also the capital of the island of Madeira, one of the autonomous regions of the Republic of Portugal. Besides the capital, the city is characterized by scenic and largest urban center of the island.

Funchal city is the most prominent islands of Portugal.
