Jellyfish have been spotted already in early June 2010, on the beach at La Mamola on the Costa Tropical in Souther Spain. The picture shows the result of a sting from last summer.

The best cure for a jelly fish sting in apparently vinegar!!

Collapsing Old N340 Coastal Road.

Large Cracks Have Appeared And Getting Bigger.

Due to possibly the worst rainfall in 60 years, the old N340 coastal road has take a severe battering, and is starting to slip towards the cliff edge overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

This route connects La Mamola to Castell de Ferro, and has many businesses along this stretch, with the road being utilised by around 1500 people per day. A petition has been set up by some of the local land owners afected by the land slip, and is being handed in to the townhall in Rubite to try and get the repairs carried out as soon as possible.

It is estimated that the remedial works necessary to repair the damage, will be in the region of 2,000 Euros.

Costa Tropical Regeneration Plans.

Major plans have just been unveiled for substantial investment into the Eastern Costa Tropical coastline. Twenty four areas in seventeen municipalities of the region have been earmarked for regeneration, and it has been stated that these ambitious projects over the next decade “will completely change life in this region”.

Recent studies have revealed a very mixed bag in terms of current infastructure, between the fairly affluent Motril, Salobreña and Almuñècar areas, and the less well endowed areas like the Contraviesa, and coastal areas further East from Motril. It has been noted that currently the main income in this region is from farming, but tourism needs to be increased, and not just treated as a second line of income. It was stated that this part of the Costa Tropical is still virtually untouched virgin territory, and therefore needs careful planning to exploit it’s rich landscape.

Proposed projects include the following:-

Motril – Commercial Centre for both commercial and leisure use built on 40 hectares to be built in the Cortijo del Conde area. 100 hectares in Playa Granada to build new hotels with minimum of 400 rooms, sports facilities but no proposed housing.

Albondón, Los Guájares, Lújar, Polopos and Sorvilán – These regions to receive hotels and rural tourism complexes, and become recognised tourist zones.

Albuñol – 20 hectares to be allocated for hotels, homes and other facilities to further boost tourism in this vicinity.

Gualchos, Itrabo & Jete – To have the necessary infrastructure put in place to promote tourism geared towards adventure and lesiure activities.

Salobreña & Molvizar The area of Los Palmares has a plans for a tourist centre, private hospital, bilingual school, residencial home for the elderly and a botanical garden. Plans to build a golf course in this area are still in place.

The long term goal is to achieve sustainable tourism, and think what each region needs to attract tourists and visitors on a global scale.

Costa Tropical Motorway Progress

The Costa Tropical stretch of the new A7/E15 coastal motorway is well underway, as can be seen from the photographs taken in November 2009. The two new tunnels sitting between La Mamola and Haza de Trigo are now completed, and works is also at a similar stage above Melicena.

Los Amigos Re-opened In Los Yesos

Well it’s been a long wait, mothballed for almost 9 years, but Los Amigos situated on theN340/E15 coast road in Los Yesos on the Costa Tropical has finally re-opened on the 30th of April 2009. This cafe bar has been completely refurbished at a cost in excess of 60,000€ to a very modern standard, complete with 3 flat screen TV’s showing various sports programs from around the world. The bar area is bright and airy, as is the adjacent large cafe bar area. The good sized South facing terrace has sea views. A good selection of free tapas are given out willingly, and there is also a varied selection of raciones including hamburgers that can be puchased. A takeaway/delivery service is one of the new ideas that has been implemented.

La Mamola Breakwater Update.

Work is currently under way on the end 2 of the breakwater at the western end of the beautiful seaside village of La Mamola. This 2.4 million Euro project was started in December 2008, and expected to be complete around September 2010. The task has been undertaken to help reduce the erosion of the beaches due to the effects of global warming.

Sad But True !!!

Sadly, due to high winds in late 2008, the oldest and tallest palm tree in La Mamola has been cut down. This palm tree was some 4 storeys high, and swayed proudly for decades in this village during the seldom windy periods that this Spanish pueblo endures.
