Five years of work finally came to a head on Monday as the third terminal at the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport in Malaga was officially opened. King Juan Carlos, accompanied by Queen Sofia, addressed the 500 strong crowd of institutional representatives from political, touristic, economic, aeronautical and communication spheres, describing the new building as “light and transparent” and in keeping with its “advanced technology”, also stressing that the extension of the aerodrome would energise the economic and tourist activity of Andalucía. He added “The Queen joins me to express our happiness at the inauguration of this new, modern and splendid terminal T3 of Malaga Airport. This will reinforce its prominent position in the dense network of airports in Spain”. The Monarch also commented that this is the oldest aerodrome that has maintained its original location in Spain (the first flight landed in El Rompedizo on 9 March 1919).
However, he also made clear the fact that the airport’s influence would transcend regional boundaries, making it an important part of “the wide and extensive modernisation of airport infrastructure” that will ensure “greater internal mobility and cohesion as well as better international connections”.
Special thanks were offered to Aena (association of Spanish airports and air navigation), architect Bruce Fairbanks, the construction consortium made up of Ferrovial and Sando, and “all the directors, technicians and workers who have poured all their efforts into the execution of this project”. The King also took the opportunity to offer his sympathy and support for those affected by the recent storms in Andalucía.

Major plans have just been unveiled for substantial investment into the Eastern Costa Tropical coastline. Twenty four areas in seventeen municipalities of the region have been earmarked for regeneration, and it has been stated that these ambitious projects over the next decade “will completely change life in this region”.

Recent studies have revealed a very mixed bag in terms of current infastructure, between the fairly affluent Motril, Salobreña and Almuñècar areas, and the less well endowed areas like the Contraviesa, and coastal areas further East from Motril. It has been noted that currently the main income in this region is from farming, but tourism needs to be increased, and not just treated as a second line of income. It was stated that this part of the Costa Tropical is still virtually untouched virgin territory, and therefore needs careful planning to exploit it’s rich landscape.

Proposed projects include the following:-

Motril – Commercial Centre for both commercial and leisure use built on 40 hectares to be built in the Cortijo del Conde area. 100 hectares in Playa Granada to build new hotels with minimum of 400 rooms, sports facilities but no proposed housing.

Albondón, Los Guájares, Lújar, Polopos and Sorvilán – These regions to receive hotels and rural tourism complexes, and become recognised tourist zones.

Albuñol – 20 hectares to be allocated for hotels, homes and other facilities to further boost tourism in this vicinity.

Gualchos, Itrabo & Jete – To have the necessary infrastructure put in place to promote tourism geared towards adventure and lesiure activities.

Salobreña & Molvizar The area of Los Palmares has a plans for a tourist centre, private hospital, bilingual school, residencial home for the elderly and a botanical garden. Plans to build a golf course in this area are still in place.

The long term goal is to achieve sustainable tourism, and think what each region needs to attract tourists and visitors on a global scale.

The Junta de Andalucia in Southern Spain are set to spend 178,000,000€ which will help to secure 3,000 jobs in the Granada province alone. The monies will allocated in the provinces of Granada, Almeria, Malaga, Jaén and Seville. The works being undertaken in the Granada province will include 1.12 million Euros of safety improvements to the A345 road, which links Cádiar to La Rábita and the coast, a notoriously bad road in recent years for vehicle accidents.
