Sierra Nevada has taken a new course and is advancing toward the 21st Century by leaps and bounds.
After a few slow years, the nineties have finally set Granada's Sierra Nevada on the map as one of the
leading ski resorts in Europe. With easy access from one of Spain's most enchanting cities on one side
and the Costa Tropical & del Sol only 100 kilometers away on the other, Sierra Nevada is a holiday dream come true. Finally,
it seems the local authorities have discovered the importance of Sierra Nevada as a privileged touristic
hub and decided it should be fed the royal jelly it deserves.
At the beginning of the 90's it snowed non-stop for two seasons and Sierra Nevada regained its
reputation for sun and snow. a new and more dynamic generation emerged and envisioned the National
Park a different way. They made efforts to place the station at an international level. Sierra Nevada
was to become host to the World Cup Ski competitions in 1996. Suddenly a rush of money avalanched
upon the little ski resort and serious reconstruction started. The two-lane mountain road became
a three-lane highway, ski lifts of great capacity were installed, the mountain was widened, the groomed
pistes doubled, snow machines were installed, hotels and accommodation were built and the village was
equipped with subterranean parking with a capacity of 2,800 vehicles. The new infrastructure was to remain
to host other international events.
Since then, the World Cup Paragliding championships have taken place as well as "surfito" the most
important snow boarding competition and cycling and cycling and rally events of great importance,
among others. Other important events hosted were the Male European Alpine Skiing Cup and the World
Alpine Cup in Alpine Skiing (1999).
The Sierra Nevada resort is only 45 minutes drive from Granada city, one hour from Granada
airport and 2 hours drive from Malaga airport. The Costa Tropical beach resorts are also around
2 hours drive, depending upon which part of the coast is reached. Visitors should also consider visiting
the attractions in Granada, outlined above.
